In professional sports, is it a random thing, and why are they so attached to those numbers?

Players could pick there numbers from anything such as events that had value to them, a birthday possiblly. So these numbers could mean a lot to them

numbers represent alot to a person, especially if your supersticious. I play sport and my bday is 9/9/1988 at 9:09 at night so i wear nine (i'm very serious). kobe had eight cos thats who his idol wore. it can mean a lot to someone and many think it brings you luck. I know people who bet on horses according to what number they wear. it's mainly supersticion.
