I checked the trans fluid, and it was pretty much empty. So I added some in, and then it would shift into reverse and all that. So it's the transmission, right? But... when I pull out of the garage, I sometimes find a fluid puddle underneath it. Is that probably transmission fluid? Does that mean that I have to have the transmission pan sealed up because there's probably a leak in it? What should I do?

Hi I think you have big problem with a trans leak.Take the car in to a professional and they will tell you the bad news.If the car is old or in bad shape, I would get rid of it.If you are going to keep the car ,carry a lot of trans oil with you.The oil level on a transmission is to be checked in a WARM condition, for proper level. So aim sorry you have this problem.Good Luck

did you check the trans fluid with the car running or not? most require the engine to be running.

If you are finding fluid on the ground under the car, you have a leak. Transmission fluid that isn't burned is red when smeared on paper. If burned its red-brown. All power steering flui that I know of is the same color.

the combinations of indications say you have either had a slow transmission fluid leak for a long time, or have a major leak. Either is bad news. A long time running eith inadequate fluid damages the transmission. A big leak means something's badly damaged.
(unless its one of the trany flud hozes to the radiator... which can leak like hell and be cheap to fix)

You probably need to take vehicle to a shop so they can pinpoint where the leak is and repair the leak fill the fluid and see how the vehicle drive Transmissions do not like to be ran with out fluid but maybe you will get lucking and after the leak is repaired and fluid filled the car will drive ok. Good Luck

You don't say what kind of car you have. IF the puddle in the garage is pink then that is transmission fluid. That means you have a pretty good leak. So check your fluid often. You can fry your trans. if you drive it to low on fluid and it starts slipping...........Dave...

Transmission fluid is normally red in color & oily. More likely a leaking seal than the pan. Have it checked.

i own a repair shop, and you either have pan gasket leaking on it or a front or rear main transmission seal leaking on it,if you keep driving it like this and it keeps getting low, you,ll be walking or paying a really big repair bill on it,good luck,i hope this help,s.
