Changing the mic or line in volume up doesn't work, and I have to record using a program with a playthrough feature... is there some freeware app to do this?

Can't un-mute, there is no mute box, just "select" to change input as mic or line in.

Don't need a recorder, I know recorders work... I just want to forward the audio.

Freeware for recording: Audacity - has playthrough option and you can even layer tracks - all for free!!
I have some online guides for recording analogue on your PC and one for setting up a microphone at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy/pc_mic.htm
You can also download Audacity from:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads.php
Obviously the guide is geared towards recording from cassette, but any analogue signal will use the same principles...
Please note that with Volume Control, there is a drop down for playback/recording. Some recording software will need you to select your source from within the software options rather than in Volume Control.

if you connect your mic to your line in port it should out put any sound that it is picking up through your speakers. If your looking to record something most media recorders have a line in recorder. audio grabber has a free line in recorder in it, and so does music match Jukebox. it will record anything that is connected to the line in port and you will be able to hear it on your speakers as it is being recorded.

right click the little volume thingy in bottom right corner and select open volume control, and then unmute the option called 'line-in'
