I'm an extremely brilliant 8th grader and on my way to high school. I want to study law at columbia university. I come from a poor family, so i need a scholarship. what should i do in high school to get it? I know it's kind of too much to hope for, but I have mostly A's in school and I think I might have a chance.

I would really appreciate any advice that anyone could offer to me; I know I am a little too young but I think it is good to get a head start on things.

you're so right about getting a head start on things. so now that you're going to high school, just keep up the good work. colleges don't look at anything before your high school education, so take as many advanced courses as you can in high school. colleges like to see a student that challenges themselves. if your high school offers pre-AP or AP courses, take them.

also, take part in as many after school activities that you can, the ones you like, of course. for example, play a sport if it interests you. of course, don't do so much that it starts affecting your grades. oh, and community service is a must. volunteer wherever you can because they'll ask you that in your applications.

that's pretty much all you have to do. trust me, i'm a senior who's about to be done with all my college apps. as far as scholarships go, colleges like to see a student that overcomes financial hardships and succeeds in school. so if you're as brilliant as you say you are, keep up the work. NEVER slack off, even your freshman year. trust me, it'll come back to get you when you get your final GPA as a senior.

Stay focused through high school, make sure your doing consistenly well. Also join groups...like smart groups, science club, when the time comes physics club, play a sport even if youre not good at it. Do a lot of volunteer work in your community. And develop a good relationship with your guidance counselor, they know about all the scholarships. And definitely dont overlook undergraduate school. Be open too, your goals may change someday so dont be affraid of that. Its ignorant to set your mind on one thing and not be open to other things that may make you happier. You'll end up miserable and at a job you resent yourself for. But good luck.

Yes, you're too young to be thinking of law school, since you need a 4 year college degree to apply to law school, and you generally don't want to attend the same grad school as undergrad. Concentrate on keeping up your grades in high school and getting into a good undergrad institution first. You've still got at least 8 years before you apply for law school.

You are a bit young but....

Get involved. Law schools like well rounded people. You need to focus more on your undergrad career than highschool if you want to get into law school. The best thing for you to do would be active in debate. Concentrate on getting into a good college. Worry about law school later.

Actually, you will soon find out that being poor just means you have a greater number to apply for and much higher probability to win one. But just get involved in clubs, show some "leadership" in them, etc.

keep getting those As and score high on the SATs

by the way it would be nice to help other people who are having trouble with schoolwork that you are familiar to. The One upstairs will reward you well
