People have been trying to get rid of the penny for decades. But in a decimal system, it will always be necessary. Of course, the concept of physical money will be obsolete when we go over to electronic money. And we could do that within a few weeks once the decision is made. Don't believe me? Put a $20 bill in the microwave and see what it does.
