Although they personally took vows of poverty, the order accepted gifts that made them richer than the papacy. This gave them a great deal of power, and they were resented as are many rich, secretive groups. Their stated purpose was to guard people making pilgrimages from Europe to the Holy Land and many rumors grew up about what kinds of riches they accumulated. They probably weren't hiding anything significant. The Templars were destroyed to make sure they didn't become more politically powerful and so they could be plundered for their fantastic wealth.

The Templars had incredible financial power because of their activities as financiers. They were destroyed because they were too big for their boots.

By most accounts that take it seriously, that I have read, it had something to do with Christ and a lineage. (Merovingian?)
They blackmailed the Catholic church and enmassed a fortune in "hush" money.
Whether it was a family line or not, The natural assumption that is taken now is that had whatever it was been divulged to the public, the Catholic church would have been ruined.
I believe that it was not because it was not part of God's overall plan.
