There are 2 opinions that I know of about the matter that black holes consume.
-It takes it somewhere else.
-The matter is crushed into non existence.

If the matter is crushed intio non existence then doesn't that mean that pieces of the universe are slowly being destroyed?

Yea, but is this going to alter the price of beer. If not then no need to worry.

According the Stephen Hawkings, the matter doesn't disappear. Rather, it is slowly expelled over time as Hawking Radiation.

The idea is basically that virtual particles pop into existence all the time all over the place but are destroyed on contact with their own virtual anti-particle.

Since this happens, if a virtual particle pair is formed close enough to the event horizon of a black hole, one will fall into the black hole and the other one will not.

The one that doesn't will move away from the black hole as radiation. The one that falls in never has interaction with the 'outside' world and thus has no 'real world' reality to it - including having no real world mass.

The one that doesn't fall in does achieve 'real' existence in that it doesn't annihilate with its twin and can then interact with the 'outside' world - which means its virtual mass becomes real mass. Thus, the black hole has effectively given off mass and will continue to do so through this process until it gives it all up and disappears.

This idea may sound weird, but that's what radioactivity is. Lets say a heavy atom gives off an alpha particle. How can this happen? The strong force should assure the protons do not escape the nucleus as they are more powerful at that scale than the electromagnetic repulsion of the protons.

However, the protons don't exist in a fixed position. They exist in probable locations that are very close to 100% inside the nucleus. That probability isn't exactly 100% though so on occasion, the location of a given proton is not inside the nucleus and then the strong force can't hold it - the electromagnetic force becomes more powerful and sends the proton (actually two neutrons and 2 protons with a total charge of +2) away from the nucleus.

In addition, matter and energy are different forms of the same thing - E = mc^2. They can change forms, but cannot be destroyed.

A black hole sucks matter in, yes, but it also increases the pull of its gravity with distance by the same extent that a normal body like a star of the same mass would. If the Sun became a black hole, the Earth would not get sucked in - it would still orbit at the same distance because the total mass stays the same. Only the density of that mass becomes infinite.

charly - oh, the irony....

Matter in black holes continues to exert a gravitational field in this universe, so it does not go somewhere else and does not cease to exist. It merely occupies zero volume. Or so we theorize. Since we can't have any knowledge of what happens inside the event horizon, it is enough to say that all the mass is inside the event horizon, which has a size that can be calculated from the gravity as measured from a distance.

Pieses of the universe are slowly going out of existence, but black holes are not doing it.
The universe would have to be infinite to accomodate a black hole, the universe is finite.

It's impossible to follow someone like Justin in intelligent matters..

My only question is:, WHO has determined that they are disappearing? That's a "tricky" survey--must be a govt funded project...

Yes the Universe will colapse, explode and start over.

It takes the matter and brings it to singularity...it is like a central vacuum for your house...it is needed.
