Basically, what I am feeling starts with an achiness in my back and works around to my sides. I also get occasional stabbing pains on my upper abdomen and crampy sharp pains below my abdomen. I am 33 weeks pregnant and these feelings come and go with no regularity through out the day for the last few days. I have read about Braxton Hicks, but being my first pregnancy I am just confused about what I am feeling.

These sound like braxton hicks. I would of course let your doctor know about them, but because there is no regularity I wouldn't worry too much. When they get regular and stay regular and increase in pain, that's when it's getting real. Good luck and congrats:)

Without knowing you or your medical history, it is hard to say weather these are braxton hicks contractions, or pre-labor pains.

Due to an overwhelming amount of women commonly having braxton-hicks contractions in their third trimester, I would bet that this is what they really are. The question comes to weather you are having any of the following symptoms, which would be a sign that you need to consult your doctor immediately:

*Cervical changes; are you having any discharge that is unusual? Any color other than clear or milky-white? Pink tinted, red streaked, or straw colored is a bad sign at your pregnancy stage, as is any bleeding - see your doctor/midife immidiately
*Baby movement: Is she/he unusually more active, or more quiet?
*History; is this your first baby? Second or more? Do you have a history of premature labor/delivery? While braxton-hicks are your body's way of preparing for eventual delivery, if you have a history of premature labor they can be a sign that your body is up to its old tricks.

I would call your nurse/midwife on call in the morning and let them know what is going on - they will likely schedule you to come in sooner than your next scheduled appointment to be checked, just to make sure.

Congrats on the new baby, and enjoy what is left of your pregnancy - this is the only chance you will have to sleep in, eat what you want, and go somewhere without a diaper bag for a while!

They are probably real contractions. What you need to do is call your Dr. tomorrow and tell them what is happening. They can hook you up to a monitor and perform a stress test. This is just putting monitors on your belly in the office for about 30mins to 1hr. This will tell them if you are having contractions and if the baby is under any stress. It is better being safe than sorry. Good luck and GO To the Dr.....your body is telling you Something!

Braxton-Hicks, for me was more like a tightening feeling, and not at all regular.
Real contractions are like the most severe menstrual cramps you will ever feel.
Good luck.

BH are painless. Your body is probably ready-ing itself for birth. It might be pre-pre term labor (if there was such a thing). If they do get regular, at least you know what to do.
