You really need a singing teacher, it won't help you much just looking on the net. A singing teacher/vocal coach will guide you through each process, explaining why you need to do each exercise and technique, and also will help develop your range (the bigger the range, the better). Have a look in the yellow pages, there will be plenty of singing teachers listed in there. I know its not free, but trust me, a good singing teacher is key.

you cant learn how to sing, its a talent. You can learn singing techniques. (breathing, holding notes, diaphragm exercises)

try searching for "singing tips" on any search engine. be very specific, though, like "rock singing tips" or whatever.
