Personally the bass and the guitar are very similar. The four strings on a standard bass are tuned the same as the top four strings of a guitar, so the top four strings will be easy to learn either way. I suggest the guitar first because it is (In my opinion) harder to learn and this will make your transition to the bass nice and smooth. Later!

First of all I would suggest learning the ACOUSTIC guitar first. Learning the electric first will cripple you because you cannot hear your mistakes and notes as clear as on an acoustic. Especially if ur playing w/ the distortion alot your eyes wont be able to get use to hearing how the notes/chords are supposed to sound.
As for guitar or bass. I would suggest guitar first for a few reasons. If you arnt in a band or have friends to play w/, playing the bass can be frustating as a beginner. If you learn the guitar you are at least able to play things that you know and can listen to. With the bass you'll become quickly bored with basslines and things of that nature. However if you are in a band and they need a bass player thats a different story.
Second if you play the guitar it's easier to go into the bass. You know the basic notes and scales so you will be able to pick up the bass alot easier.

learn the guitar first, it's easier to play the bass after you learned the guitar, and they are NOT different instruments at all. fyi, there is a 6-string bass guitar. you could play it like a basic guitar and you could play the basic guitar like a bass.
trust me the bass guitar is easier, so learn the basic guitar first and it will be much easier to switch...
we are talking about the electric bass guitar and not the big old bass one? well it has the same method of playing but different only in size, but basically the same...

Hmm....I've been playing guitar for 9 years, and bass for 3 years, i found bass to be alot easier, because it basically is a rythem holder like the drums, and guitar can be VERRY frusterating, but..id learn guitar first, then the Switch to Bass is a helluva a lot easier to do, good luck to you. (personally i like guitar better)

it depends on if you have good percussive timing.
if you do, learn the bass first. if you are better at melody and harmonies, learn the guitar first. but really, they aren't that hard to play with simultaneously since the bass is just the first four strings of the guitar.

i'd have to say guitar because the bass usually tends to be harder for people, but it all depends on how you learn really. I'm learning guitar, but one of my friends plays both and he says bass is harder.

Well I own 3 electric guitars so I will just give you my opinion. I think electric guitar is way cooler, and cooler sounding, and if you are a person who likes to show off, the electric guitar is for you. HOWEVER, if you are more into music, and enjoy the beat, I would recommend bass. Bass is a lot less common and way easier to get into a band than electric, since just about every guy plays electric. IMO, play the key board. You can do whatever you want on these suckers, and any band will take you because there are practically none!
