The YMCA was a number of different activities, but I don't know about living there.

I'm sure it sucks.
Unless you like to be surrounded by people who haven't showered in days and like to sleep on a cot and eat mass produced kitchen meals.
And yes, people do stay at the Y. Some places have "dorms" usually someplace downtown in large cities. Kinda like the salvation army.
