Vasectomy should be considered an irreversible procedure. Anyone with significant doubts about this should not have it done. However, some men consider having a reversal if they wish to have more children, for example, due to a new relationship forming or death of a child.

Vasectomy reversal involves rejoining the cut ends of the vas deferens using microsurgery. The operation is much more complex than the original vasectomy and is usually done under general anaesthetic by a specialist using an operating microscope.

Yes, men can have a vasectomy reversed, with a pretty good sucess rate. My husband had a vasectomy and they told him the facts about getting a reversal.

Yes, once the ends of the vas deferens are reconnected, they stay reconnected. If the reversal was successful, and most are, he should still be fertile....there is some scarring that can occur with time, but that happens within the first 18 months post reversal. It's estimated that anywhere from 2%-30% of reversals "scar shut" within this first 18 months of healing (depending on how good a doctor was that did the reversal). Our doctor's stats said 3% of his patients typically scar shut. With us, we conceived 15 months post VR and now at 19 months post VR, my hubby still has plenty of sperm present in his semen. He is one of the 97% that will stay fertile for the rest of his life.

Yes, vasectomies are reversible, just are tubal ligation's, but they can reduce your fertility.

The 40% figure he gave you is actually quite accurate, but you will not know if it is successful until he has a sperm count.

If you are trying to conceive and it has been more than several months, have him go and get a count first. This is the quickest, easiest and least invasive fertility test that a couple can have when they are trying to get pregnant.

Good luck!

Vasectomy reversals can be done. But, they are expensive and not always successful.

I think as time goes by the reversal procedure becomes more effective than it once was. My BIL just had it done. No baby yet, but they haven't been trying long.

it can be done but it is easier if you tell your DR before you have the vasectomy that you may want it reversed one day
