Difficult to remove. You can try rock salt although some folks believe it will damage the shingles. You could also use non-corrosive calcium chloride. Do not use a torch to try and thaw the dam.

To prevent it from happening in the future, you must add more insulation to your attic and make sure the attic is well ventilated. Insulation will help keep the heat in your home from escaping into your attic which is what typically causes ice dams to form in the first place. Ventilation will also help to keep the attic cool in the summer and will help remove moisture accumulation.

Do not try to chip or break the ice off. Use an ice melting product and make sure the water has some place to go. Next, you must make sure you have proper eave to attic ventilation. This can be achieved by using insulation baffles from the soffit area to above the height of the insulation. This will allow cool air to pass across the bottom of the roof sheathing and not allowing the warmth to get to the roof board.

First you must free the downspouts on the gutter system then free gutters put calcium or salt in the gutters If the ice dam is causing a leak you might want to get a price on installing ice shield. that depends on the cond. of the roof.There also is a heating element that (1) can be installed to the roof eve edge and (2) that can be installed to the gutter, downspout.
