THE BUDDHA spent his life to discover the essence of life, salvation from suffering etc.i think Buddha himself did not propagate Buddhism. His followers propagated his preachings in all directions-Buddha's statues and relics in India and it's surroundings ( Afghanistan,Srilanka and in the north east ) indicate this.It may be in later years that caste system dominated in India.

during the regime of Buddha there was no religion called buddhism. He preached a few ethics where ever he could go. Those ethics were later gernalised by the mankind. Since they followed ethics laid down by Buddha, they were called buddhists - 'Baudh' to be more precise. later this group was termed to be a member of a religion different from others which we now know as Buddhism. As a matter of fact, Buddha had no idea that his preachings could give rise to a different religion. It's the flaw of the mankind to discrimnate people based on their ethics...

As a matter of fact he didn't propagate Buddhism anywhere. Even the name Buddhism came much later. Buddhism remained as on of the numerous philosophical streams already running in India with Non-Violence and Nirvana as the central idea. This philosophy was new in other places such as China where the concept of a fearful God were prevalent.
