depends which country you're coming from and which side of the road you're used to driving on - driving in south africa can be very dangerous, especially for tourists travelling alone. joburg is one of the worst places for travellers to be driving alone. i would rather advise that you contact your hotel and see if they can arrange a shuttle or driver to pick you up from the airport. do not take public transport, and utterly avoid the "black taxi" system there if you value your lives. i am not remotely interested in those who claim its safe as thats nonsense - i know of and have experienced too many incidents to count, both for south african residents and for travellers. rather be safe than another statistic thats policially buried somewhere in the bush along a roadside.

Renting a car would be your best bet. Public transport here is actually very good, but it is not oriented towards moving tourists to remote areas. Ignore other users trying to scare you about hijacking; unfortunately many racist South Africans come on these boards to spread their hatred and try to scare people away from SA. I'm an American that has lived in SA for 4 years and have driven all over the country and have never had a problem. Keep your street smarts about you at all times and you'll be fine. Also, call your hotel and see what they recommend, maybe they have a better idea. Enjoy your stay!

There is a greyhound service from Johannesburg to Nelspruit which is close to one of the entrygates into the Kruger Park. Either that or hire a car...the drive through the Lowveld is awesome...I've done it many, many times when I lived over there....and I was alone and female....so don't listen to all the scaremongers!!!!!

I am not sure if there are buses that go there. The public transport is not good here. I think the best bet would be to rent a car. It's easy, can be done at the airport and puts you in charge of where you wanna go and when you wanna go! Have fun! ;-)

there is no longer a rustic in the international that has no longer misplaced a tourist at sometime because of the offender factor. travelers get killed each 300 and sixty 5 days in the U.S. by ability of the offender factor yet there is not any moratorium on traveling to the States. same would be mentioned of Australia, China and and so on. every time we get in a automobile, practice, airplane or bus we take of venture that it ought to no longer get to that is trip spot yet we don't turn ourselves into prisoners in our own properties over it. in case you will South Africa use your head. do no longer flash your money around,do no longer p.c.. up hitchhikers, do no longer provide up for stranded vehicles on the line - call it in to the police or checklist it on the subsequent toll gate if there is one. carry a cellular telephone and have emergency #s coded in. in the adventure that your motor vehicle breaks down, stay in the automobile, lock your doorways and await police.stay with your occasion and are not getting misplaced. locate out the place the difficulty spots are in the diverse cities you bypass to and circumvent them. No white individual of their top concepts went into Harlem in the 1960's - Jo'burg has comparable spots in 2008. I 'm no longer saying South Africa is Utopia nevertheless aspects of it advantageous experience like it on occasion, regardless of the undeniable fact that that is no longer one in each of Dante's Infernos the two.

Public Transport is almost non existent in South Africa so you should hire a car but be very careful on the roads. There are numerous car jackings on South African roads and you should only stop at designated rest areas with petrol stations and food outlets etc. It would be foolish and dangerous to stop on the open road and criminals are very adept at faking accidents etc to get motorists to stop. Maybe you should research car jacking in SA via Google before you take to the roads.
