As mentioned by a couple other respondents:
Many of the earliest heavy metal groups (and others) purposely appeared satanic. Many even bragged about it. Lots of them included satanic ideas in their lyrics. Look at AC/DC, Highway to hell & Hell's bells. See Dio album titles and art. Just the name "Black Sabbath" evokes visions of anti-Christ ideals. Some purposely put satanic symbols on their album covers. See Led Zepplin and Rush (not necessarily "heavy" metal). Many even associated themselves with avowed satanist Anton Levey. There were many rumours about satanic activities that these groups did not publicly deny.
These groups, and many like them, were playing to a teenage audience that was naturally rebellious toward their parent's ideals. At that time, the majority of parents were teaching their kids Christianic ideals. For many groups it was a financial decision to sell more albums.
Many songs from heavy metal groups had clean, honest lyrics, but this wasn't the image they were selling. Most heavy metal groups today have penned both classes of songs. Some of them are, undoubtedly, satanic, but their chosen style of music is not necessarily an indication of their personal belief systems.
The genre earned it's reputation for satanism honestly. Most of the players do not mind the label. ;)

Black Sabbath started it, Led Zeppelin followed and since then it's just considered the norm for the closed minded.
My personal heavy metal fav is White Zombie. Living Dead Girl just gets my energy level going! To look at this CD cover you'd think Rob Zombie was the devil himself!!
Heavy metal offers something that all other types of music from Mozart to Jazz just can't give! It overwhelms your senses and demands a response. My personal response is to crank it up....
some they respond with fear because they don't understand it's appeal. High Unrelenting Energy! Resistance is futile.

Yes, I agree as a metal lover. It's unfortunate the common misconceptions. There are in fact metal bands out there who are satanic and scream horrible violent and ungodly lyrics. Most metal bands do not. Thanks to the few that do, the rest of them are forever doomed to the stereotype. I think it is important for people to read the lyrics and understand them before passing judgement. Some of the most meaningful and heartfelt lyrics I have ever heard have come from various metal bands I have enjoyed over the years.

Some of the lyrics, and some of the artists are anti-christian, glorify satan, etc. Some of those bands are serious. Most of them are doing it for fun - it's a gimmick. Llisten to Gorgoroth, and tell me they say anything positive and meaningful, by christian standards, and I want you to keep a straight face while doing it. Doesn't mean listening to them will send you to hell.
Sometimes the "dark" and "grim" imagery just makes people think it's evil. In contrast to Gorgoroth, there's very little actual evil to be found in Immortal's albums.

During the 70's some preacher went to youth study groups across America handing out pamphlets describing conspiracy theories, such as playing music backwards, adding up letters to form a secrte message. He went on claiming that names of bands have devilish meanings such as KISS-Knights In Satan's Serivice or Slayer (Satan Laughs As You Eternally Rot) Although they interviewed the members of those bands and they said that is not why hey had those names.

when I was young the Beatles and all the rock and roll was considered evil by preachers, ignore them.in this world people just love to judge others, even tho it says not to judge or your not going to make it to heaven if you do Jesus said that and I believe it, YOU know what is in your heart,it's not what you listen to ,its what you or inside is what counts. But personally I have heard some heavy metal bands brag of being satanic,I have heard it in some of their songs.if your around it.and you don't have the spirit of God in you it MIGHT affect you.of course it might not,, so be careful, reject the devil.please. ,be aware of what goes into your mind, while your having a good time, have your good time, being young is great. enjoy your youth, I wish you the very best.

Hmmm?
Maybe because most of them try real hard to appear Satanic?
Like:
Danzig
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Tool
Kiss
Judas Priest
Cannibal Corpse
Even 'rock' has cultured the appearance of Satanism:
Rolling Stones (In His Satanic Majesty's Service.)
The Beatles (The "Butchered Baby" album cover.)
Guns + Roses (Twisted evil artwork)
I don't even care, I just wonder how you think they are not working hard for the image?

Because people qre quick to judge before they even listen to it. It's called ignorance. I don't listen to heavy metal, so I have no idea what it's about but I'm not gonna draw the conclusion that ALL OF IT is satanic.

All steve and i could do was laugh.

It's the same reason that people thought that Elvis was the devils music, if they don't understand it they think it's wrong.
