Black Power was a political movement, most prominent in the late 1960s and early 1970s, that strove to express a new racial consciousness among blacks in the United States. More generally, the term refers to a conscious choice on the part of blacks to nurture and promote their collective interests, advance their own values, and secure their own well-being and some measure of autonomy, rather than permit others to shape their futures and agendas.

Tommie Smith (gold medal) and John Carlos (bronze medal) famously performed the Black Power salute on the 200 m winners podium at the 1968 Olympics.

it is a symbol of the group called the "black panther party" founded in the late 60s. it was an African American organization founded to promote civil rights self-defense.. i think they later dropped the party and just went by "black panthers" after a while. Anyways the group was formed after malcolm x was killed to continue his fight and to show "the man" that killing malcolm wouldn't stop the black race.. but they all eventually got currupt and group faded away. something to that effect. the fist in the air originated from them though they never used it on any flags or anything, they just used to do it and since they were fighting for black empowerment then sure it means black power...

i dont know any afro americans, but if you mean blacks or african americans, then generally it does mean black power. like said before, it could also just mean solidarity in the face of adversity.

What does it mean when a white man incorrectly uses a term that is meant to be for people who are actually from Africa?

Why does race have anything to do with anything anymore?

Newsflash, it doesn't.

Some statistics will show otherwise, but if you're the one judging by origin or ethnicity, then you should seriously rethink why you exist.

Also, punctuation would help.

Absolutely! The gesture was started by the Black Panthers in the 1960's. Any Black doing it for real is a radical racist much like the KKK or Skinheads.
