Yes, with my son I had my membranes stripped - twice. You need to be slightly dilated, about 2 cm so that your doctor can insert his gloved finger into your cervix and gently run his finger between your amniotic membranes and your uterus. This 'irritates' the uterus, and sometimes can cause contractions that leads to dilation and labor.
Now with me, it didn't work, and my son was born at 41 1/2 weeks anyway.
As far as this being another way of inducing labor, yes it is, just as similar as taking long walks and having sex with your partner. All do the same thing: providing pressure of the baby's head on your cervix to induce dilation (walking), providing postglandulans to dilate your cervix, and mild contractions (sex). But these are also the safest, most non-invasive ways to induce labor - therefore I would recommend trying any of them AFTER you hit the safe 38-week mark.
Either way, unless medically induced by pictocin, if the baby is not ready to come out yet - it wont!

I had my membranes stripped with my second child at 38 weeks and I remember it being uncomfortable (pap smear type pain), but within 2 days I had a perfectly healthy baby. I have heard of some people getting this done multiple times.
Hope this helps.

I am 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant, I had my membranes stripped yesterday, for me it was not painful at all, just uncomfortable. I have had a bit of a discharge, some mild cramping, a lot of pressure but nothing yet. I've heard that this works so we'll just wait and see. My midwife told me to drink 2 tablespoons of castor oil and a glass of orange juice. We shall see.

I was 40 weeks the day I had my membrane stripped! I had been at 2 centimeters since 37 weeks, and was not dialating anymore. I got them stripped that morning and had scheduled and induction for two days later, but hours after it happened, I started having contractions! (didn't make it to the scheduled date) I went into labor that night and had my son the next morning! But to answer your question, I think it brings on labor. Good Luck!

This is like a gentle nudge. If you are ready to go into labour it will tip you over the edge but if you aren't then it won't do anything except make for an (exceptionally) uncomfortable internal exam.
Also, your doctor can't do this unless you are at a minimum of 2 cm dialated.
This isn't really another way to induce because if you're not ready to have the baby it has no effect.

Did it, it did not get things going. We did it 3 times with my second pregnancy. I have had it done at least once with every baby except my first and it has never started anything. Some people find it very painful, for me it is mildly uncomfortable. Good luck.

that is exactly what it is. Another way to induce labor. If you choose this route your contractions will be harder and labor may last longer then if you let your body take its natural course. Unless there is a medical reason for you to have your labor induced i don't recommend it.
