That the person learned a lesson by having to go through it personally. For example, he learned the effects of smoking by getting lung cancer or he learned the effects of smoking the hard way.

It could mean something you don't believe, but is actually a fact or not taking advice and learning the hard way or realizing the hard way.

it means that you will find out you are on the floor when you notice the bruise you your leg. (sorry, I was feeling symbolic) It means you will go through something for a while that will prevent you from accomplishing something in the easiest way possible.
