I am interested in learning about the stars and would like to learn more.

may i humbly suggest buying a good pair of binoculars first. not the most expensive pair, but not the cheapest either. binoculars will provide a wider field of view, and will noticeably increase the unseen ( by the naked eye ) objects in the vicinity of the objects you are viewing.
also, read as much as you can about astronomy. general astronomy and specific interest's , such as constellations.
then, if you are still interested, then buy a refracting telescope first. once you advance, you may want a reflecting telescope.
would also be nice for you to visit an abservatory, if you can

Depends on how much you're willing to spend. If you can spend a few hundred on a decent scope, check out Meade and Celestron for great amatuer telescopes. Their websites will put you in touch with local and online dealers.
