It's actually sort of a running joke. They are in Springfield, but there are so many Springfields in the USA, and they take pieces from many of them as the episodes go on. They've never specified what state they are in.

I'd say Springfield, Kentucky because the name is mentioned a few times. There was a mug once with Kentucky on it. A lot of the episodes mention Kentucky some way or another. I don't think it's Illinois at all.

"They" say that there are clues in some episodes that give clues to which state "Springfield" is in. I haven't been able to figure it out, but some real fans might know.
