I'm trying to germinate an avacodo fro seed and some websites recommend that I use charcoal in the water at the early stages to "keep the water sweet". Is there a special type of gardening charcoal and where can I purchase it?

I recommend that you use wood ash. this will sweeten the soil and water for your plant. I use wood ash on my organic farming operation. It a natural organic fertilizer. See if you can burn some old and dead tree limbs in your BBQ grill to get free wood ash. then use on your seed or seeds. Do not use charcoal with lither fluid for this leave a residue that might kill the seed.

Home Depot. I think it is called activated charcoal, but I could be wrong about the name. It can be found in the garden department, by the specialty soils like the African violet and succulent soils. But it is not necessary, just change the water if it clouds up.

You can use activated charcoal, that which is used in aquarium filters. A local pet store or Wal-Mart might carry it.

Another option would be to simply change the water frequently.

If you have a nursery or garden center they should have little bags of the right kind of charcoal on their shelves. I use it in the bottom of terrariums to keep the soild sweeter.
