The current monetary situation with the NHL is very rigid. Their T.V contract being minimal that is not a great source of revenue for the NHL. In fact for most franchises if they were to get a TV contract it would help increase yearly profit. Pre-lockout, the amount salaries were being inflated each year, the decrease in fan attendance and the decrease in Commisions through tickets, fan merchandise and recreational costs, the teams were losing money instead of making. The players will get paid, but ultimately not at a price that will keep them at the NHL. I see a lot of these European players going back to play for their respective national leagues. Many of these players are worth a lot more the price they are getting paid currently.

Well that you are a Coyotes fan basically explains this question. If you were a fan of a good team I'd ask what was wrong with you. Seriously I see Coyotes fan and read this and think Oh he must just pay attention to them because of Gretzky. So the players can't make 10 million a year now. So they have a salary cap now. Guess what the NFL has a salary cap and amazingly enough the players get paid. They have no problem getting paid with the hard cap like the NHL's.

Dude, it's not just the NHL. The other three major professional sports are doing the same thing; especially baseball. Millions of dollars for one player just to sit in the dugout for half the season (like the DH for one). And then there're some who are grossly overpaid like Jeter and Ortiz. What is with that guy anyways? Guy looks like he's almost 300lbs and still gets paid millions to hit a ball and sit around for 90% of the game.

At least hockey, football, and basketball players take some sort of physical punishment and has to actually be in shape to play their sports.

The players want to be paid more because the league makes more money, if they generate a profit for the league I can't blame them for wanting to make more money, Hockey's salaries are probably the lowest of the 4 major professional sports, look at baseball and Alex Rodriguez he makes 25.2 Million a year

why not? players get paid by the teams, who get the money from tickets, merchandise/concessions, ads, tv revenue, and occasionally by begging the owners for more. certainly, the salaries won't rise at the same rate as the other major pro sports, because tv contracts won't be as big, but it doesn't seem like you really have a coherent question here

What did you expect when they moved to -VS- from actual network tv. And the decision to hold the All-Star game on a weekday. I'm sure that helped exposure.

everybody wants more money. Self-worth is tied to money earned, and we all want to be good.
