I have a Volvo S40. Sometimes not often when I go to start it it just wont. All of the lights and radio and stuff come on but it wont even make a sound to turn over. I changed the started and it's doing it again. when I changed the starter the repair guy said the starter and the battery check out as fine. What else could it be? Spark plugs, Battery? What?

This happened to me last month - and it was the battery. The mechanic said the battery was holding a charge - and it was. It just couldn't let the charge out. The problem was that there was a break inside the battery, between the terminals on the outside and the lead plates on the inside. When the battery was put back into the car, the two pieces of metal separated, and there was no power again. Sometimes, there would be enough power for the lights and radio, etc., but the starter couldn't draw enough power through the bad internal connection, so the motor couldn't turn over. This is usually caused by too much bumping and vibration while driving, or by someone overtightening the battery cables.

First off when it acts up and don't want to start, when you turn the key and it don't even try to turn over did all the lights go out and radio all go dead?? IF they all went dead then your problem is in the battery connections not necessarily the battery just the connections. For example, if the negative cable was loose everything in the car would work but when you try to start your car the instant and HIGH demand for electricity would make what little bit of connection you had dissappear but still be there enough for lights etc. IF you connections are corroded real bad that could also cause havoc on trying to start car so start there if connections are clean and tight then your next part would be the solenoid. That is the device that transfers power from the battery to the starter when you turn the key to start your car. That would be second. Let me know hope this helps

Hey, she said it wouldn't even turn over so you're all wrong so far...
Try shifting into neutral and starting it. If that solves the problem then you need a new neutral start switch. If not, could be the ignition switch or anything interrupting the circuit before the starter. Volvos are complicated so you are best off taking it to a dealer.

Based on your description, I assume it's not even cranking ("wont even make a sound to turn over"), and the starter and the battery are OK which makes me to believe that the problem is in the ignition key or (more likely) the starter relay or related wiring.

It could be your antenna immobilizer ring. I have seen them go on these vehicles before. There is a small computer inside the steering column that reads the microchips in your key so the vehicle can recognize your key from someone else's. If that immobilizer is faulty, then it will read your key as just another volvo key. The only way to find out for sure is to run full diagnostics on the car, which only your dealership can do. Go pay the money for the diag because if your antenna immoblizer is bad, it could leave you stranded somewhere.

The ignition switch could be wore out from heavy sets of keys hanging in it.

It could be the spark plugs, you might have to pull them out and clea them or get new ones, or it could be the batter, and also check the power plug wires.

probably the distributor and cables. If your'e going to change them you might as well change the sparkplugs to be on the safe side.
