Here is a scientific explanation: After the earth was formed and an atmosphere developed, the oceans became sort of soups in which protein molecules arose. Those eventually became one-celled plants and animals (amoebae and algae) which, through series of mutations, gave rise to more and more complex life forms over time, some of which migrated onto the land eventually. As the higher life-forms evolved, a number of the animals developed the means of reproducing via ovulation (producing eggs), and their offspring incubated thereafter in externally released eggs or, in the case of most mammals, internally in uteri from fertilized eggs.
So, the answer, from the point of view of science, is that an ancient creature, somewhat resembling a chicken (or bird) developed the ability to reproduce via the process of ovulation.

Animals and plants both evolved from earlier organisms resembling bacteria or stromatolites. If we trace their geneology back far enough, eventually you hit the first life on Earth, which was probably extremely simple and which arose chemically from complex but nonliving matter.
Also, eggs definitely came before chickens, because chickens are not the only animals that lay eggs and in fact invertebrates were laying eggs for hundreds of millions of years before chickens ever evolved.
