Do you think geting a degree in theatre is a bad idea? It is my love, but I want to be able to get a good job. What all can you do with a theatre major other than act or teach acting?

I've been in theatre 54 years. In many years I didn't make my living via theatre. If you can hack it, double with theatre and teaching degrees. Another would be Theatre and computers and/or electronics. I made more money as a tech. than at any other of the many theatre jobs it takes to stage a play or musical.

Getting a degree in theater is a great idea if that is what you love. If you're concerned about having a job when you graduate, look into the school's stats and find their placement rates for the selected major. Most schools keep that on record so it should be relatively easy to find. Your best bet is to talk to the dean of the program at your chosen school and see what options you have with the particular concentration you choose. I have a friend with a theater degree, she not only performs but does makeup and hair as well. Right now, she has a wonderful job that she loves as head of makeup and hair for a local style magazine. It fills her time well between parts and heading crews. She just graduated last summer. So good luck, do your research and go for what you love to do! I wish I had the nerve to do it myself, I feel the exact same way!

My advice is that you get a degree in something else, so that you have a fallback. Once you know that, even if you can’t succeed in theatre, you have a way of earning yourself money and getting a job, you can go for your dreams and try for a theatre degree. Move to NYC for a year and audition, and, if you succeed, hooray! If you don’t you’ll know that you have another chance with that other degree. You’ll be glad you put in all of the extra time.

Getting a degree in theatre can help you, particularly if that degree is from a well-regarded institution. I would suggest that you minor in something else that would allow you a "survival job" skill for between engagements.

Have a backup degree in something else. Business is a good one. That way you can always run your own business one day. I know oyu love theatre, buy you will have bills to pay.

If its your love go for it. I love visual arts and am combining that with a childcare course to teach children art. Combine your degree with teaching or any other interests you have. For eg costume, make-up, stage and lighting.
