A cheap way is to use tang.
but for an inexpensive, nontoxic way to remove rust, try this: Once a month sprinkle a layer of Tang (tm) Breakfast Drink or lemon Kool-Aid (tm) on the sides of the toilet and in the water, leave for 1 hour, brush and flush. Repeat if necessary. (For those of you who are wondering, citric acid oxidizes the rust.)

The best thing is to take a fine wet sandpaper such as 600 grit. Dip the paper into the water and rub away the rust. Works every time

Rust stains "IN" the toilet bowl I assume you mean.
Get a product named "Iron Out", and use it as directed.
Don't breathe the fumes of this stuff. It works GREAT!!

Look for a product call "Iron Out." It works great. You can also get tablets for your tank called "Rust Guard" by Whink, who makes other rust removal products too. The tablets keep the rust away for at least a month (depending on the amount of flushing). You should be able to get both products at Wal-Mart or Target. I also found them in my local grocery store and at Home Depot. You can probably find them for sale online too.

I have rusty water too, and I use SNO BOL, made be Church & Dwight Co. If it's really bad, put a good coat on before you go to bed after everyone is done using the toilet. Don't forget to put the lid down if you have pets! Works great, smells good and it's cheap!

If it is the inside of the bowl that you are talking about, then you will need a pumice stone. (The rock used to soften your feet) It can be found it the beauty department of any walmart or target or drugstore. You will need to wet it inside of the bowl (wear gloves) and rub it with the pumice stone. I do this whenever I come across that problem. It works!

Use a product called "drywall sanding screen" found in small sheets in hardware stores.
I lady who worked for a cleaning service showed me this and it works fantastically! It will take off ANY stain, including rust and other minerals.Plus you can cut it into small pieces and use it for months.
and...no chemicals!

The best product I have found for this is The Works Toilet Bowl cleaner. Wal-Mart sells it for under $1.25 a bottle - it works wonders.
