My house has a circulated range hood and I would like to get a new one with exhaust pipe. Should I consider add the duck work thru the roof or along the ceiling out to the wall? I have a one story wood shingle roof. thanks

Either way. If you go through the exterior wall you want to be sure not to cut through any studs without making the necessary repairs which could get extensive. Going through the roof will probably be easiest. You must know what you are doing with wood shingles(or shakes?) to ensure you don't create a leak. A GOOD roofer can install a roof top vent lickity split. Try using a flex DUCT to connect the range vent to the roof flashing...

For starters:
duck = little bird that says "quack"
duct = air conduit you are looking for

Answer - Along the Ceiling and out the wall is often fairly easy, depends on geometry and/or cabinets - if there is space and - IF THE RANGE IS CLOSE TO THE WALL! Otherwise you'll have to look at other options. Often times builders will use the charcoal filter type of hood fan if the range is far from an exterior wall. There are limits on how long the duct can run. Inspectors focus on duct length, routing, and material. Improperly installed and designed ducts can lead to fires. Get a copy of the uniform building code and/or requirements from the planning department in your city/county before you start.

You can vent the exhaust directly into the attic.

Ducks go "QUACK!"

Ducts are in your house.
