There was a discussion and vote concerning the choice of American Eagle as the symbol (bird) of the USA. English was chosen as the official language about the same time. These are two items from a list of several provided by my American History teacher in high school. The list all pretained to items we take for granted as to how they came to be.

Ben Franklin suggested that the wild turkey should represent our country. While he was a very bright man, me thinks he may have had a couple shots of Wild Turkey before suggesting this.

The turkey was never actually a candidate for our country's "mascot".

In the midst of the decision, Ben Franklin suggested to his daughter in 1984 (via a personal letter) that they might as well choose the turkey if people wanted the eagle, which he considered an ugly and stupid animal.

Our "Turkey" replaced into named erroneously via Ben F who concept they looked like a chook interior of sight to the country Turkey. He replaced into incorrect, for this reason the ignoble status of that foul chicken. And all people who thinks they're stupid might desire to attempt searching a wild one.

I can tell you that Ben Franklin was insistent that the Turkey be chosen, so although I can't give you an exact date, it's a safe bet that it was in the 1700's.
