Shakira, Alleaya and Riannah are real first names. There are many reasons for an artist to drop his or her last name. The most common reason being that the producers think that with a name as long and difficult as theirs, a second name would just take up to many precious space on the bilboard or the cd cover.

Pink was originaly the name of singer Pink's group. for some reason however, the name quickly became attached to the group's lead singer and appearantly the other band members didn't care whether they were for instance Mrs. Pink's bassist or bassist for the band Pink, so the name stuck.

Well I'm not sure about the other young ladies listed here, but in Shakira's case, her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll. Shakira is much easier to say, and it's unique enough that she doesn't need her last name to be identified. I don't think it's pretentious at all.
