As an elementary school teacher, if a fight breaks out in the classroom I would separate both individuals and ask them to write down what happened. This gives both of them a chance to cool down and get down on paper what happened. As soon as possible, while the other students are working on an assignment, I would call each of them up to speak to me privately. I would ask: What happened? Did you do anything to trigger this? Did the other person?

Then I would speak to the other person involved asking the same questions.
Last of all I would have them tell each other what happened. Asking: Do you agree with what X said? Yes, good. No? What did you see? Through dialogue and questions that drew out the truth I would have each person claim responsibility. Finally I would ask what they could do the next time they have a disagreement with someone.

I am a teacher and I have used this method. It works. Dialoguing to solve the problem. Asking kids what they did and allowing them to claim responsibility rather than accusing them works wonders.

Hope this helps.

I was an elementary school teacher and a fight did break out in the classroom. The district I worked for at the time had a "no physical contact" policy. If students did fight, they were suspended. When the fight started I broke it up, sent one up to the office. I did not send them at the same time for fear they would fight more along the way. I called the office to make them aware the students were coming. The second student refused to go to the office when I instructed him to go. The Admin. came to the classroom and abruptly escorted him.

If a fight broke out in a classroom if I were an elementary school teacher, I'd call both of the kids' parents, and take them out into the hallway. A lecture about character, would be helpful, but if that doesn't work, try getting the problem settled by sending the kids' to a peer mediator or school counselor! Good luck...

As an inner city elementary teacher, it happens quite frequently. Depending on how big the fighters are, you try to break them up, sometimes other students will help, sometimes they will keep the fight going. Call for assistance. If anyone shows up, they usually will remove the offending students. If the fighters have calmed down, send one to the office at a time. Students usually get 3-10 day suspension. Or maybe nothing. Depends on the student, on how the building administrator is feeling, whether they like you or not, whether thay like the students who were fighting, depends on whether it is "count week" when the state allocates money according to how many students show up in a particular week. (Yeah, it is pretty stupid.) After you get the fighters out of the room, you or your students can get the room back in order.

It does really depend on the climate of your school, but as a retired elem teacher, I would "911" the office and then make sure the other students get away and as safe as possible. If it was occurring often, I would teach the students to exit the classroom and stand aside until help came, things can get so dangerous today.,

Separate the kids. One goes to one side of the classroom the other to the opposite side. Keep them in at recess and find out what started the whole thing.

Depending on the problem punishment could be as easy as extra homework or the old " I will not fight' 100 times on the black board.

In my school system, fighting is not considered a minor problem. Depending upon the size of the students, (I am male), you might consider if direct intervention is apporiate. I have stepped between some that were bigger than me. Once the fight has halted by whatever means, the students would be escorted to principal with at least a 3 day suspension. Few questions asked!
