We have a 10 gallon, cycled, freshwater tank. Three swordtails are happily living in it. We have some green and red algae growing. What fish and how many do you recommend that we add next to the tank?

None, 3 swordtails are already pushing the limit in the tank by themself.

I would not put anything else in that tank. You actually need a bigger tank for those fish. Swordtails grow fairly large(5-6 inches) and will have no room to swim in a 10 gallon, even if you only had 1 swordtail.

Swordtails can grow up to 4 inches. The general rule for tropical fish tanks is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water; however, that varies further depending on the type of fish. But, in choosing fish for your tank, you have to allow for their full growth size. So, you have 3 fish who are or will be 4 inches in length. That totals 12 inches, or 12 gallons of water. Thus, you cannot add any more fish to this tank if you want to continue having your fish be happy and healthy.

How big is the tank?

If you want to rid the algae, Buy a plecotimous or get algae chemical.

If you have more than 1 sex of swordtail, (males are thin, and have the long tails. Girls are a little plump with short tails), you should not buy any more fish (other than the algea eater).

Let nature take its course. If the next tank is larger, you should buy more fish that are live-baring, such as forktails, gupies, and mollies.

Do not get frogs. They'll eat the babies!!!

dont add anymore to this tank...however, if you should get a second 10 gallon or a 29 gallon...try your hand at sailfin mollies...a wonderful fish....here is a link explaining about how many fish can go in any one tank...and it isnt the inch per gallon rule most folks think it is either...give it a once over...it might help in deciding wether to add another fish or another tank...good luck and enjoy ur fishies.

Danios are always good for a community aquarium. You might also want to try a fish that cleans the tank or a Molly. Be careful of how many you put in there, though, because sword tails breed quickly. Do not put in any carnivorous fish, or any fish that lay eggs. Also avoid extremely exotic fish, like mud skippers or something.

No more, as nunya said 3 swords is already pushing the tank once they grow up. They actually get larger than most other common livebearers and it catches most people off guard.
