Something you know about. It depends what genre you like to write. Experiment with different things before starting. For example, I never thought I'd write mysteries, but I had to write one for school, and now I'm writing a novel based on the detective from that story.
Once you decide a genre, think of what you want your book to accomplish, what theme you want it to have. Do you want your book to tell people to stay strong through difficult times? Do you want to give your readers an exciting, fast-paced thriller or mystery?
Now that you know what you want your book to accomplish, start to think of a setting and a plot. Those are both important, because your plot can often depend on your setting.
Now that you've got a setting, and a basic plot, add in some characters... And you've got a good idea for a book.
Good luck! =)

A poet once told me, "write about what you know". But it depends on if you want to write fiction or non-fiction. If you want to write fiction, I would suggest writing 10-20 pages of a short sci-fi story, a western, a mystery, a thriller, a romantic story, etc. That way you will learn different ways to set the mood, describe characters, etc than if you were to write just mystery books and nothing else.
If writing non-fiction, I would suggest "Write about what you are interested in" even if you know very little about it. Then you could research, and since you know little about it, you wont be looking for things that are one-sided, you'll naturally simply seek to learn the truth.

Only you can answer that. If you have writers block then try creating just a single character then go chanel sufing on the TV on each chanel wether its news, a show, or a commercial ask your self "What would my character do in this situation?" Do this and you'll have an idea in no time.
