quad band gsm means that it does all four GSM frequencies, 850/900/1800/1900

quad band is used for travelling. the US uses the 850 and 1900 bands, and the rest of the world uses 900/1800.

if you didnt have one of these frequencies and travelled, you would not be able to use the phone.
