I think what it came down to was, as a person got eliminated each week, the viewers didn't stop watching, they still watched and still voted. If their 'favorite' was voted off, they found a new 'favorite' and ultimately that left Chris with more votes needed each week. If you liked Kellie or Paris and they got eliminated, you probably wouldn't vote for Chris the next week, you'd vote for Katherine, Elliott or Taylor which is what happened.
Apparently those people who were voting are not buying the records, because Chris' debut album hit #1 and has sold over a million copies. His first video also debuted at #1 on VH1 Top 20 Countdown.

What is comes down to is votes and not just how many people voted, but HOW MANY TIMES each of those people voted. The sould patrol had some crazy fans that probably voted non-stop continuously for the 2 hr time slot. I'm sure Kat and Chris had some of those as well.
I never voted for tayler as I like the other two better, and I would vote a few times if I got through. If not then, oh well. We'll just check the next night and see what happened.
Please don't feel sorry for Chris. I'm actually glad he didn't make it all the way through. And it actually really makes sense.
If you've read any recent interview with Chris he said it's the best thing that could've happened. He can do the music he wants and it won't be forced to be pop. It makes sense because in general the type of ppl he wants attracted to his music are not the type to be the die-hard, vote-80-time-a-minute-for-your-idol type of people. His band is doing sooo well and he's doing exactly what he wanted and Idol was a way to get his name out there.
That said, I was torn between kat and chris and don't know which one I prefered last season, but right now I think I like chris better. still love kat though.

Simple answer....the Soul Patrol. Taylor's fanbase, which is the Soul Patrol voted each week in droves to ensure his victory. Although the other contestant's did have strong fanbases, Taylor's was very overpowering and steadfast each week when it came to voting. I think the early hype with Chris Daughtry being a favorite did damage his chances, because people assumed he would be safe, so the less likely they were to vote. Katharine also had a strong fanbase, but not nearly as massive as the Soul Patrol...not to mention Taylor also gave shoutouts to his fanbase after several performances on the show...which also built up steam.

I like Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee more than Chris Daughtry. As with any performers, it's subjective. Someone will always think one is better than another, etc.

I have no clue why he won. He was not nearly as good as Chris. My mom even stopped watching that season because Chris left.

Daugthry was the best of last season. His sales records shows that. Kat was better than Taylor... but for a stupid reason he won.
