And why is it seemingly only men who are mocked in this regard. Is this not a double standard?

because sex is power these days, virgins are ascribed a weak connotation in societal view. i was watching a show about sex addiction last night and they touched on this topic. it was stated that a man who has many sexual partners is put on a pedestal by his peers while a woman who does the same thing is called a whore. it isnt fair - but thats what a double standard is.

nowadays i've seen men and women alike called 'gay' just because they choose to wait. everybody wonders whats wrong with them. i think its a personal choice and should stay that way. in our society, peer pressure and stereotypes run rampant, skewing everybodys view.

Men are insecure when they run into someone who has convictions they can stick too. So, if its someone who is a virgin by choice - then the only thing they can do is mock to make up for their own inadequate sense of personal assertiveness. Now, if a man is a virgin - not by choice - then, its the frat boy mentality of making fun of the guy who doesn't 'fit in'. Either way - the people doing the mocking, have some serious issues they are trying to avoid, and its pretty sad for them.

Of course its a double standard, that has always been around. One rule for men, and another one for women. If a man has multiple partners, supposedly that makes him a man. If a woman has multiple partners, then she is considered a loose woman.(Being Polite). I am from old school, and in my book, doesn't matter who does the sleeping around they come under the same category, and should charge for the service. Pay taxes and have it considered an occupation.
In my book, those who keep there virginity are better off than those who give it away, because you may get something that you can't get rid of. Even with medication. So if you want to be in control of your body, feel free to choose, who, when, where and why. It's your life enjoy it and be happy and the others go to H--- and wonder why. So be happy with your self and your choices and good luck to you.

If you're referring to the movie "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," I deliberately did not go see that movie (offensive premise). The double standard here also says that women are supposed to be "pure" on their wedding day and men are supposed to be "experienced."

Gak. From what I've seen in the papers (I don't have a TV anymore), the title character seems to be a really nice guy; and it seems that he is being mocked.

I really wish I knew the real answer to that. I think maybe people are afraid of purity and afraid of the unknown. And temptation is all too easy to give into, especially the physical. Men are not the only ones who are mocked, but it does happen to them more often. I suppose people expect men to have more experience with everything, not just sex. A loaded question really, to be unleashing here, but a good one :)

The standards that our society places on those within it have changed and is continuing to change for the worse a person that has the internal fortitude to not give in to to days pressure should be congratulated: Virgins men/women do as you wish and good luck!!

I think both women and men have pressure put on them to have sex at younger and younger ages. I think our socioty is too hush hush about sex and so kids don't know all the facts and rush into it. On the other hand there also seeing "stars" have wild parties, bumping and grinding and talk/sing about how sex is great. Frankly we need a little more education and less "sex is bad" talks. Be upfront with kids about sex and they'll make better decisions. I'm 16 and still a virgin and proud of it, stupid 16 year old guys really arn't worth my purity. But hey thats just my openion.

It is not a double standard because women who are virgins are mocked to . Although probably not as bad it is still "taboo" to remain a virgin when you are over the age of say..... 18 when your are supposed to be an "adult"

I never understood this because everyone tells you to wait. then when you reach a certain age they say.... When is it going to happen, you should get laid....ect.... :)

I wish I could help out more...

Well, i can tell you why that is. First of all, men like to "plump the chicken" or "parade the goose" while there is an impression that women do NOT. Also, we like to "hurl the monkey" and "dress the mongoose" more, so it is unusual to find such men. And remember, theres strong, and then theres ARMY strong. Just go to the on screen guide and choose from hundreds of titles! Happy house hunting!

Yes. I really dont care if someone is a virgin. I have a co-worker who is 26 years old and hasnt even kissed a girl. I just give him a couple of tips and pointers here and there to help him not be so shy.
