The coach of the team with the best record in the conference at the time of the All-Star break gets selected. However, no one is allowed to coach for two consecutive years.

This year, the Mavs and Pistons had the best record going into the break, but both of their coaches coached last year's All-Star game. Therefore, the coaches of the Suns and Wizards, the teams with the next best records in their respective conferences, were awarded the spots.
