Actually, the piece can become ANY piece that you decide (except King). The most popular choice is of course a Queen, because it is the most powerful piece, and can move in any direction. That being said, if you wanted to make it a Rook, then go ahead. Before getting to the other side though, the pawn can only move forward in a str8 line, and can only take other pieces diagonally, only moving forward.

They are called Pawns. When they reach the end of the board they get promoted to a piece of your choosing (Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight). Although the majority of the time you promote a pawn to a Queen, there are numerous instances that you will choose another piece, like a Rook or a Knight.

This usually occurs when getting a Knight might give you a quicker way to checkmate your opponent or automatically attack several pieces at once (like your Knight attacking your opponents King and Queen at the same time). Also, weaker players will sometimes get a Rook over a Queen because it is easier to accidently put your opponent in stalemate with a Queen than it is with a Rook.

When the little pieces in front (they are called pawns) reach the front they can become any piece they want besides king. The queen is the most popular because it is the strongest piece. Once I got every pawn to the other side and I got 9 queens (Including the one I started with)

I'm looking at all of the answers here and I'm here to tell you that it doesn't just become a queen. Well, first of all, they HAVE to turn into something because they can only move foreward and they would be stuck. It can turn into anyother piece on the board though. Not only the queen, although a queen is a popular choise.

Good luck on the checkmate mate.

If you get a pawn to the final rank, you can promote it to any piece except a King. Queens and occasionally knights are generally chosen, depending on the situation, but it's perfectly reasonable in some circumstances to promote it to a rook or bishop.

They are called pawns. If one can get all the way to the opponent's side( to the last row-where the king, queen, bishops, etc. start out), then you can get any piece back that you want.

Wotever u want (except king)
its called promotion of Pawn (the front row ones)
usually people promote pawn to queen bt it also depends on situation whether we promote it as queen or knight or bishop or rook.

you can turn it in2 any piece you want, most ppl will choose queens cuz theyre the most powerful piece, also you can have multiple queens on the board, you could have as many as 9 if you got all your pawns across(wouldnt ever happen though)

actually the pawns may become any piece that you want. But why would you want anything other than a queen?
