You would just put the cards down in similar layouts like tarot cards. If you need help with what tarot spreads look like there are numerous books on the subject. To help translate the cards, the suits correspond as such.
Diamonds are the tarots coins or pentacles
Hearts are cups or chalices
Spades are swords
Clubs are rods
You can have the Jack/Knave of playing cards be either the Knight or Page of a tarot deck.
From personal experience I have found regular playing cards to be harder to read from. They can be a good place to start if you do not want to spend the $20 or more on a tarot deck. I didn't buy my first tarot deck until after I noticed I could read playing cards.
Also you can take a tarot deck and use it as playing cards. It is how I helped myself get a feel for the slightly larger deck and different pictures.

1. Cut the deck up into three parts. Be sure to make a wish before cutting the third part.
2. Take seven cards from each of the three parts. Make a seperate deck out of the 21 cards you just drew.
3. Deal the cards from the 21-card deck into 7 seperate catagories. The catagories are (in this order):
To yourself
To your family
To your wish
What you expect
What you don't expect
Whats sure to come true
4. When you're finished you should have 4 cards in the first three catagories and 3 in the rest. Flip the cards over one by one and read them for each catagory.
If you need a guide to what all the cards mean, just email me. My email address is on my profile.

Btw, I've learned that tarot cards are MUCH less accurate than playing cards. Even though playing cards are harder to read, you shouldn't use tarot cards if you want an accurate reading.

Buy the only true Tarot card: "The Ancient Tarot de Marseille" you will have many answers to what you want to know. If you only want to play cards, simply buy a game of playing cards and play cards.
This is the best advice I can give you so as to avoid.... to go through a lot of rubbish. Good luck with the real thing.

Divination can be dangerous in that the answers received depend more on the spiritual state of the asker than any objective voice "out there." Tarot cards are only understood by the interpretation of the seeker. They seem to "speak" but it's a little bit like a psychedelic drug experience. It only tells you what is already within you. Therefore, an "evil" person gets "evil" answers. He can't get anything but. Jesus Christ taught, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." It's something like that. A person whose heart is clean, gets clean answers. God can speak through an infinite variety of ways. To me the question is how to be sure that your heart is clean. Only God can forgive sin. I believe that's why he sent his son Jesus to earth. I do also believe there is a devil, some embodiment of evil that tempts us and lies to us. It is possible that he has access to us through the use of occult sources. Again, I believe this depends more on the intent of the seeker than anything. Those who go seeking evil find it. Those who truly seek the light always come to it. Your friend in Christ, Nick
