I have an infant with reflux who has had difficulties with breastmilk and almost all types of formula. The pediatrician has her on zantac and has recommended we begin using nutramigen. Has anyone used this type of formula and found it to be helpful? I seriously doubt she has a milk protein allergy or soy allergy, but I'm willing to try anything to make her feel better.

I have used it,my son has an allergy to dairy and soy,I now use Similac Alimentum,he seems to like it better. They are both very good,my son is also on Zantac but I do not believe he has acid reflux,he has never spit up,My pediatrician knows I do not agree with her on this so we will only use it for 1 more week if there is no improvement.both Nutramigen and Alimentum are very good.

Actually, we had great luck with Enfamil AR. It is thickened with rice starch so it stays down much better. I have only used the Ready to Feed, because I was told it is smoother and would treat her reflux better. we had immediate results with it.
We had first tried Alimentum by Similac to rule out a milk protein allergy. But the Alimentum made NO difference. The Enfamil AR showed results within 2 days of using it. It is wonderful!

Our doc put her on AR as soon as she diagnosed the reflux. She felt that was the best formula to treat it, because it is thicker and helped to control the acid in her belly.
She skipped Zantac and went straight to Prevacid. It works great.

If she has no allergies to milk, I would ask about the AR. It is perfect for Reflux
Good Luck..........

Yes, I used it with mine ( she is now 13 months) anyways I do not know why they told you to use it over the enfamil AR ( have you used it yet??) If she has reflux that formula will make it worse ( I know by experience) It is VERY thin, therefore it comes up VERY easily!! I used nutramigen because mine was VERY COLICKY ..she ended up to be allergic to milk and could not handle anything including Alimintum. I liked it but mine had to be on a reflux prescription because she spit up sooooo bad and half her bottle would come up. I guess try it and if it works good for you!!

Good Luck

ps. mine used it till she was 12 months and now she is on a next step formula ( a soy one.. she can handle that now..but still no milk )

My baby was put on Nutramigen because he was colicky. We were told it only works in about 25 percent of the cases. Luckily for us it worked. Unfortunatly his reflux got worse on it. It is not good for acid reflux at all!!

If you're just wanting to try it the pediatrician should be able to give you a sample can and if it turns out it works, ask your pediatrician about a free month's supply. It may only be in the state of Tennessee, but I know we were given one because of how expensive it is. And if you're on WIC and worried about it, the doctor can write a prescription for the formula so that it can be obtained at the grocery store.

Every baby's different. I can only tell you to try it out and see. Good luck and I hope you find something that works!

We tried nutramigen with our son (he is now 14 months) when he was an infant. We only used it for a short time. He did ok on it, but we ended up using Gentlease by enfamil. I'm not sure how much it helped. Sometimes he still spit up - but he was gaining at a healthy rate, so we kept using it until he was a year old.

What helped mostly with our son was keeping his head elevated after eating. I was so concerned that he would spit up in his sleep.... it was many months before i had a good night's sleep.

nutramigen is quite expensive, as is the gentlease. good luck.

My son had problems with reflux and couldn't handle breastmilk either. We tried Nutramigen and it was just as bad. Nutramigen is very thin in consistency. We use Enfamil right now and he hasn't been spitting up as much. Ask your dr about Enfamil AR.

Yes I used nutramigen ! Only one my daughter could keep down. I tried to take her off at 13 months, and the vomiting was horrible. I kept her on it. I mixed reg formula in it after she was 14 months. She finally for off it at 18 months.

Now she can drink just about anything. She can eat Ice cream now, and she couldn't when younger. She is healthy. I used the powder, it was so much less waste, and at the price you dont want to waste.

She was born at 10 lbs 9 oz, and in 3 weeks dropped down to 7 lbs, This was a blessing that the doctor finally wanted to use this. She had Apnea so the vomiting was dangerous.

When my twins were infants we had the same issue. Went as far as almost having to have surgery. They were put on nutramigen as well. NO that did not work. They were on zantac to. It's very minty and hard to get them to take it. What worked was PRILOSEC. They were entered into a study at Scottish Rite children's hospital. It was to see what dose of PRILOSEC would work for infants. After the study we had to find a pharmisists to compond the pill into liquied for them to take. By the time the pharmasist got the formula from PRILOSEC they had stopped refluxing. I believe that saved them from surgery. Ask your ped about switching to the infant form of Prilosec. If they say they can't tell them to call Childrens Health Care of Atlanta. a.k.a Scottish Rite.. good luck.

It was like a miracle for my oldest child (refluxer and milk/soy allergy.) If you're baby has reflux it is SO likely that he has a milk and/or soy allergy. They more times than not go hand in hand. Try e-bay as far as getting it cheaper. I bought cases (sealed and within the expiration date) for less than you would buy them in the stores. They are sooooo expensive (my husband and I used to call the stuff "liquid gold") but if it stops the crying and keeps baby happy---it's WORTH it's weight in gold in my opinion! :)

My son was switched to Similac Alimentum but I do think it made him worse. So we switched him back to Enfamil. He spit up so much but never had the pain associated with reflux so we just had to wait til he grew out of it. It sounds like from other answers that it really depends on the child. Its pretty expensive though but if it works its worth the money. Good luck, I really hope it helps her.
