An auto shift kit will make the transition between forward gears quicker. This is referred to as a more "positive" shift. If you use it with your stock engine it would tend to lower the lifespan of your engine and transmission mounts.
A "positive" shift is beneficial when there are aftermarket upgrades done to the vehicle and power output is significantly increased. This is because the stock setting on the transmission is designed to proved slow, kind of sliding engagement from forward gear to forward gear. On a vehicle with lots of power this slow transition will cause quicker wear on the clutches. If you have a low ratio gears and something special on the engine, the shift kit would be a great idea. Not to mention the great feel of acceleration kick that happens when it shifts. You may also want to look at the kind of shift kit you are getting as some kits have extra parts that will help increase the usable life of the trans.

It will change the point at which the trans shifts up and down. Also, it usually makes for a harder, more abrupt shift, and the shock can damage the trans if it's a bit worn.
