My personal recommendations are PEEPS and LAST DAYS by Scott Westerfeld. And BLUE BLOODS and MASQUERADE by Melissa de la Cruz.

definitely any books in the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.
Start off with Interview With The Vampire. Then watch the movie with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise to see the characters come alive, and to compare and contrast. Watch out for Kirsten Dunst, she plays Claudia from the book! She really does her character well.
Be careful not to get sucked into the story line ; ) You might end up reading till the twilight hours.
Anne Rice is a keeper...

Never read many vampire books but I can list a few that I saw on the shelf when I worked at Barnes & Noble the Lestat and Anita Blake series have aready been mentioned. There is another series titled Dhampire, there's a few novelasations of the Marvel character Blade, as well as novelizations of the Buffy and Angel series. You might also want to check out Dracula by Bram Stoker. you never can beat a classic.

Any of Darren Shan's books are excellent. The Cirque Du Freak series is about vampires, and the Demonata series is about demons. They're a bit morbid, but they're good books to read. They aren't the most lovey you could read though. I've read Twilight as well and I would still recommend them to anyone who likes vampire/horror books.

With all these answers, you have a very valuable list of great books here. One not mentioned is "Those Who Hunt the Night" by Barbara Hambly. Imagine a Sherlock Holmes/vampire novel and you get the idea. Sounds awful, but it's saved by the fact that Barbara Hambly is such a good writer.

R.L. Stine's Dangeous Girls books are pretty good. They don't have a real connection with twilight or new moon, but the storyline is a little darker.

The first one is Morrigan Cross, then The Dance OF God, and the last one is The Valley of Silence.
