Our 'Dear Leader' Sk. Mujibur Rahman abdicated English in early 1970s at the request/demand of his party's student wing's leaders when Bangladesh got liberated from Pakistan and the then ruling-class and their adherent followers took the 'freedom' literally in almost all of their acts and applying theory or doctrine dogmatically.

The irony of their action was that, these leaders and their ardent followers would send their children in any of the ‘developed’ countries like USA, UK, France, Germany or Japan and also sometimes to India for getting 'proper’ education, mostly using English as medium of instructions, and condemned the average/ poor students of the country to the only available medium of instructions – Bangla.

These so-called great-leaders of ours would cite the example of China, Russia, Japan, Germany, France and such countries that would not need English as a language for learning or instructions, as well as means for climbing the ladder of success in their respective countries.

The degeneration of overall education system started from the very beginning, among many reasons the glaring examples are, abandonment of English and allowing copying and such unfair means in School, College and University exams, proliferation of private teachings by school, college and university teachers to earn extra money. PS. It is true that teachers in our country are worst neglected in terms of remuneration and/compensation for their effort to properly educate pupils.

Similar situation of neglecting English existed (but at a lower scale) in Pakistan too. The exceptions were India and Sri Lanka as these two countries put lot of emphasis on learning and practicing English in their daily lives. Therefore, the decline of English reached to such an alarming stage now that we in Bangladesh may have to 'import' English language teachers from India, UK, USA, Canada, Australia and such native English speaking countries.

I would suggest you to read the English language Weekly Newspapers, Magazines (Time, Reader's Digest etc). The qualities of English in our Daily Newspapers are not very good. Therefore, go for subscribing "Weekly Holiday" and/or subscribe Time / Newsweek. If money is a problem then buy the older issues at a very cheaper price from Nilkhet book markets.

Watching BBC, CNN, Sky, Aljazeera (English) etc satellite TV News on regular basis would not only help your with English vocabulary and pronunciations but also to understand world affairs as a bonus or byproduct!

My daughter could not get chance of admission in Dhaka University (DU Gha-Unit) for her failure to answer questions in General Knowledge and Current Affairs category, though she got GPA-5 in her last HSC Exam in Commerce. So, you see, when about 50 pupil contest for single seat in an average in DU, one must be proficient in his/her own subject as well as English & current affairs.

By the way, I saw you answering the only question in Y!A wherein you have used perfect English in comparison to your this question, which I think is not very well prepared and a few spelling mistakes crept in.

In any case, you have spoken the heart and mind of our new generations of aspiring students who are made hostage to the whims of our education-planners' wrong decisions, starting right from 1972.

It was only the late President Ziaur Rahman who gave some real importance to the matter of learning English from primary school level upto University. But his life was cut short in a mutiny and the effort to improve standard of English also could not much progress from there on.

Therefore, we have to learn proper Bangla (mother tongue) as well as proper English (lingua franca) for our survival with dignity in this competitive world.

PS. On November 17, 1999 UNESCO declared our language martyr day (21st February) an international event in recognition of the language movement of 1952 when supreme sacrifices were made by the sons of the soil for preserving Bangla as our state language. Now February 21 is observed as the International Mother Language Day in 188 countries across the globe.
