I have a ball joint in my hand that is rusty and can be moved around easily and seems to grind. The 'ball' in the 'joint' seems to be too small for the 'joint'. A lot of room. This is the condition a dealer sold my son a car in and marked it Suspension Legal..yes. Seems like there should be grease or rubber or SOMETHING in there to stop the metal on metal.

I was a fleet manager and former Pa state inspection mechanic. There should be no play in a good balljoint. Just enough clearance between the fall and socket fo a film of grease. Go to a parts store and ask them to show you a new one. Dealer is a crook.

Should have a boot over joint filled with grease, feel firm to rotate by hand, smooth with no play at all.

Tommorrow show it to a third party mechanic who has nothing to gain or lose by giving you a honest opinion. Ball joints normally are not rusty if they are new.

most new vehicles stop using ball joints that need to be lubricated. standard ball joints have polyurethane- structure that does not need maintance. the old grease ball joint is over. if the ball joint grind,it is worn out.
