I had a problem with tampons when I first started having my period. It was scary for me because it was new to me, and it hurt. I just didn't understand how the people on the tampon commercials could be so happy :P. It didn't go in far enough, it hurt REALLY bad and it didn't really help. So what I did was I waited later in the day so I was alone at home so nobody interrupted me so I could be in the bathroom for a while. Then I took the instructions out of the tampon box and read them closely. I relaxed, and grabbed a tampon and following the instructions tried different ways to put it in. I did that for a little bit, then I finally figured out how to do it. Before, I wasn't doing it right, and I think i somehow put it in the wrong spot..

Just take your time and try to relax. Once you get it you'll get used to it and it won't be scary anymore.

You might also want to experiment with different tampons. I found some easier than others at first.

Good luck hun.

Try OB tampons for a while, they're like the inside of regular tampons, I'll use my finger covered by tissue paper to put them in. I used those for about a year and they helped me get used to the direction I wanted the tampon in.

Of course, I didn't realize you were supposed to push the applicator inwards to get out the inside of the tampon for a very long time either. (Mother never wore them and I never asked anyone else)

I'd suggest O.B. tampons too. I've always used them. first of all I think they are the most absorbent and best on preventing leaks. Second, they are easier to use. Wash your hands, flair the tampon and gently guide it in. Wash up when your done too!! Without an applicator you may get a little messy, but once you get the hang of it you'll love using them!!! Relax and don't rush.

Thats because you are unfamiliar with it. After a certain amount of time you should be comfortable with using them. The cheap tampons that are generic brand tend to be harder to use because the two carbon deposits dont slide together easy.. Use Tampax pearl or gentle glide whatever its called.
