both hurricanes and tornados. I was in a tornado when i went home with some girl from college . we were in her basement and heard glass breaking and high winds . when it was over we came out and found out that the houses on each side of her house were gone we were the only house on the block standing . I think god was watching over us that day.

A tornado missed my building by about 500 feet once.
No damage to my building, but some houses nearby were damaged.
As it passed my district, the tornado was not too powerful, "only" an F1, but it was strong enough in other parts of town (F2) to destroy a few houses and damage some commercial buildings, including a Walmart.
After it went through, I helped some neighbors clean some debris and fallen trees out of the street. And then I went to work the next day and power was restored sometime during the day.
I'd just as soon not see one that close ever again!

I saw a big stove pipe tornado when I was a little kid. I saw that thing about 8 miles out. I was a little kid. It wrecked up Toledo Illinois. I've been close to many of them but never saw them. Just knowing there near by is very scary. Last Easter Sunday I was up close and personnel with one. It was a quarter mile away. It was sitting stationary out in the field. I thought to myself,"If I ever get hit by one I want it to be that one" It looked pretty week. It went back up in the clouds. The clouds were rotating really crazy right above me. I was crazy to sick around outside. It stayed that way 5-10 minutes, till the circulation moved north of me. Then it dropped out of the sky again. This time it was much larger. Luckily it was moving north-east, away from me. Tuned out it moved across the whole county only ripping up a barn roof.

I have been in a number of them. The earliest one I remember passed by our school when I was in about 3rd or 4th grade. It ended up destroying a neighborhood. A K-Mart was struck while I was inside during my high school years, and two have passed by my work places. We were also chased down I-55 in Illinois while trying to get our brand new car home before it could hit. All of this happened while I lived in IL. I have personally seen about 7 tornadoes.

Yes. it can be very scary. I remember looking out the nearby window during a presentation and seeing 2 funnel clouds closeby was frightning. I went to lower myself on the ground and eventually they passed by, but let me tell you, tornados are nothing to joke around about.

Twice, I have been in a storm that reportedly had a tornado in it, though I never saw it. The one thing I did notice both times was green clouds(?)

The National Weather Centre has people who spend their lives tracking and researching tornadoes...
