The Belgariad and Malorian series by David Eddings has several strong female characters, a Sorceress, a military queen, and a strong diplomatic queen. You could start with Polgara the Sorceress which is the story of the sorceress.
The Earth's Children's series by Jane Auel has a strong female protagonist some sex, but very tasteful, and Ms. Auel does extensive research to make her stories of this early woman very real.
Marion Zimmer Bradly wrote some wonderful books about the Camelot Legend but from the female perspective. The Mists of Avalon and Lady of Avalon are both very good.
And two women writers you may like are Joyce Carol Oats, [Foxfire ] and Margaret Atwood, [The Handmaids Tale] both write wonderful books with female lead characters.
Enjoy!

I love Dorothy Gilman!! Hope you've read Incident at Badyama and Tightrope Walker. Those are my favorites of the non-Pollifax books.
Try the Aunt Dimity books by Atherton (light mysteries with a ghost), the Master Quilter books by Jennifer Chiaviani, Mignon Ebert's Angel books, Susan Wittig Albert's China Bayles, Margaret Maron's Judge Deborah Knott mysteries, and the delightful No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. The first one is my least favorite: if I'd read it first, I might not have read the others, but fortunately I started with the second one. They are best read in order (except for the first.
happy reading!!

Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters, (the same person), has a ton of mystery/suspense novels with female protaganists to her name. Many of them under the Michaels name have a supernatural twist to them, most turn out to be fake; Peters is more straight mystery, with a long series featuring the family of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody.
Laurie King has written both a series set in the twenties with a female apprentice to Sherlock Holmes, and a modern series set in San Francisco featuring a lesbian homicide detective. She also has a few stand-alone mystery/suspense novels that are excellent. The modern series necessarily has a little more violence in it, but neither has a lot of sex.
Josephine Tey wrote 8 excellent mysteries before dying in 1950; The Daughter of Time is one that I know was reprinted recently. Due to the time period, the police detective who shows in each is male, but there are fine, intelligent, strong women in the forefront of each novel.
One other tip; if you are looking for books without much sex or violence, they are very likely to be shelved as young adult or teen books, solely for that reason. Take a stroll through that section of your library or book store and you will probably find some gems.

King Fortis the Brave, despite it's name, has two very strong female lead characters - Aimee and Gillian. No sex (though there is definitely something there between Gillian and Rodney) and very little violence it's full of adventure, humor and action. A must read for everyone!

Three I am familiar with are Sue Grafton's Kinsey Mahone, Karen Kijewski's Kat Colorado & Agatha Christie's Miss Jane Marple.
