Trade dollars were made (minted) from 1873-1885.
No 1871.

The liberty dollar was minted in 1871 (1866-1873 AND Looks totally different) but no 1871"S" minted.

sO ANY 1871 TRADES ARE FAKES.

Your description matches the US trade dollar, but since none were dated 1871, I reckon that your Trade Dollars are fakes. There were stories of counterfeit coins originating from the Middle East, especially gold coins brought back by soldiers after the war. To confirm, you can weigh your dollars, but that would be a lot of trouble to go through. An easier way is to compare your coins with an example from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Tradedollar.jpg
Pay attention to the details.
