are you going to mortar the joints or drystack, footer or no footer. there are a dozen or so bonds and patterns to choose from. you can strip the sod and just start stacking them or you can dig and pour a footer and mortar together a nice looking wall. time and money is what it boils down to. get a book on stone masonry and find the look you want and go from there. stone can be cut with a chisel , saw or a hydraulic press. but dont think youre going to cut that granite stone as easy as youre going to cut that chunk of sandstone or limestone. lots of variables in this question

Don put you on the right track. Use Feathers and Wedges to split out large stones. Use a Gad to work it into the shape you need. Use a Facing Hammer to attain the finish you want.
I must tell you, it is not easy to make a nice looking stone fence. The ones you see are done by professionals and it takes years to become a Stone Mason. Remember that ugly work will last forever.

You can rent a concrete saw from a local rental place like Home Depot or Lowes. Your cost will depend upon how big your job is, the size of the saw you rent, and how long you keep it out. Cost can vary from $39 / day to $149 / week for a 12" blade saw. 14" and 16" blades are more. Good Luck.

You can drill holes in rock, then drive feathers and wedges. This is the traditional way of cutting large stones.
