Timing is ok. Spark seems to be good. Tried ether to check if fuel pump is working and it still would not start which, I was told meant that the fuel pump was ok. I'm out of ideas. Anybody know of anything else to check? Please don't say take it to mechanic. I'm trying to fix this myself.

Well assuming the engine is mechanically OK, it's either spark or fuel. You tried ether which means it isn't fuel. It has to be spark. Even though you see spark, that doesn't mean there is a valid spark inside the cylinders.
Culprits include plug leads, spark plugs and distributor cap. Try replacing those and see what happens.

If the fuel and spark is ok, perhaps something wrong with air supply, check for air leaks.

well when my 1990 sable did that it was a damn wire to the ignition it took us forever to figure out and we had to take it to a mechanic cause we couldn't get to it. Good Luck

Timing is OK,tu decis ? Como lo sabes ?quien te dijo que el timing esta OK ?
Cuando la escobilla del distribuidor gira y los platinos se abren,tienen que hacerlo cuando esta apuntando al cable de bujia numero 1 , PERO,HAY ALGO MUY IMPORTANTE !!! , y es que el PISTON No.1 sube 2 veces ,una vez esta arriva con los platinos cerrados y otra vez ESTA ARRIBA Y AHI !!! ES CUANDO LOS PLATINOS TIENEN QUE ESTAR ABIERTOS Y LA ESCOBILLA APUNTANDO AL CABLE DE BUJIA No.1,ahora para estar segura lo que tenes que hacer es sacar la bujia No.1 y mover la polea del ventilador hasta que coincidan la APERTURA DE LOS PLATINOS,con EL PISTON ARRIBA y si todo coincide pero los platinos no abren gira despacio el distribuidor hasta que hallan abierto,y ahi te va a arrancar.-
